Colin Hunter at the Confessionnal: The rise of the jazz crooner follows Sunwing's growth
A few hours before his sold-out concert at the Confessionnal of Le Capitole, Colin Hunter chats with the leaders of the Quebec airport authorities as well as partners and travel agencies at Il Teatro restaurant. The President and Founder of the Sunwing Travel Group regularly comes to Quebec City to combine business with pleasure, performing the classics of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett.
But don't think that his shows are just a hobby. Mr. Hunter's musical career is serious business. The crooner has his own website (colinhunter.ca), where all the dates of his numerous concerts in Canada and the United States are displayed. He also owns a jazz club, the Jazz Bistro in Toronto, and has played at some of the most prestigious venues, events and festivals in Canada and abroad.
The 150 tickets for his January 31 concert at the Confessionnal were sold out in less than two weeks. "He will return to Quebec City every three months and we are in discussions with the Confessionnal to have him perform two nights instead of just one," says Sam Char, Sunwing's Executive Vice President for Quebec, who also acts as his agent.
Sunwing continues to grow
Colin Hunter is pleased with the excellent performance of his company, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary in Quebec this year. "The current results are exceptional, as we are experiencing one of our best winter seasons," he says.
Sunwing is already the largest integrated tour operator in North America, with the largest travel leisure company offering sunny destination flights from more than 33 airports in Canada, including five from Québec, to more than 45 popular destinations in the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America. In January, the company won the Consumer's Choice Award in the category of best tour operator in Québec.
The Sunwing Travel Group's management is now looking to the future. This fall, the company began construction of its new regional head office in Laval, which, in addition to the administration, there will be a sales department, marketing, a call center and groups department, customer service and finance. Built at a cost of $12 million, the new building will have three floors, but the structure is designed to accommodate a fourth in order to adapt to the company's growth needs. "Our move from Ville Saint-Laurent to Laval will help us recruit a quality workforce thanks to the presence of a multilingual pool living in Laval," explained Sam Char. Along with the numerous tourism and travel training courses offered at various colleges, this will make it easier to recruit qualified candidates".
